With the start of the installation of the railway technology in the Gotthard Base Tunnel from the northern end, a further milestone in the construction of the project-of-the-century has been achieved. On 2 September 2011, around 40 journalists came to Erstfeld to see for themselves.

Huge installation site opened in Erstfeld

Since the beginning of September railway track, overhead power lines and the electricity supply, as well as the telecommunications and safety systems, are being successively installed in the Gotthard Base Tunnel from the northern end. In order to allow the work to be progress smoothly, the Transtec Gotthard consortium has set up an approximately 65 000 square metre installations and construction site, equivalent to the size of ten football fields, in Erstfeld (Swiss canton of UR). Transtec Gotthard is responsible for the installation of the railway technology in the Gotthard Base Tunnel and consists of the companies Alpiq InTec, Alcatel-Lucent/Thales, Alpine-Bau and Balfour Beatty Rail. Alpiq plays the lead role in the consortium.
