Grimisuat irrigation network – storage and sustainable water management

  • Project initiator: Commune of Grimisuat, Drosera Ecologie Appliquée SA, Idealp SA, Geoval SA
  • Description: Having no water supplies of its own to speak of, the commune of Grimisuat relies heavily on water from external supplies. Moreover, the Revouire lake, the main water storage facility for the irrigation of agricultural land, has lost almost 30% of its capacity. The commune has opted for a global three-point approach to the problem – water resources, storage, and supply and distribution. This approach has identified several lines of action for the commune, such as clearly defining water requirements, increasing storage capacity, reducing water losses in the supply and distribution system, reducing water requirements by enhancing the drip system.

AQUATY

  • Project initiators: Commune of Ardon, Romain Lugon
  • Description: AQUATY is an aquaponics project, a combination of plant cultivation and fish farming. The fish are farmed in tanks while the plants are grown above ground. The fish droppings, a natural fertiliser rich in nitrogen, are fed into water vessels containing the roots of the plants. These nutrients enable the plants to grow and filter the water in the vessels before returning it to the fish tanks. This virtuous cycle makes it possible to save up to 90% of water, avoids the use of chemicals and produces water in a natural way. The water is used for both fish farming and plant cultivation – local, 100% organic production.

Integrated water management at the communal level of the City of Martigny

  • Project initiators: Commune of Martigny, Bureau technique Moret & Associés
  • Description: The project implements integrated water management at a communal level, operating as closely as possible to its natural cycle, following the watershed approach. Choosing to operate at a communal level means that various projects can be implemented efficiently and the necessary skills can be combined in a single entity. The projects are aimed at using and protecting water as well as protecting the natural environment and are based on the communal hydrographic network, composed of the Dranse, its tributaries and the lowland irrigation channels. One of the flagship projects is the revitalisation and flood protection of the Dranse; a multi-objective project designed to make the town safer, to protect the natural environment, to develop biodiversity and to create leisure and recreation areas. Another particularly innovative project is the use of lowland irrigation channels to create a remote cooling network.

Regeneration of surplus drinking water for vineyard irrigation

  • Project initiators: Commune of Vétroz
  • Description: The project plans to make better use of water for irrigating the Vétroz vineyard by using the overflow of the Péteille reservoir. The drinking water sources produce a large annual volume. When production exceeds consumption, the water is currently discharged into the environment through an overflow at the Péteille reservoir, located on the hillside. In 2021, this loss amounted to more than one million m3. The aim of the project is therefore to supply the vineyard irrigation network with the excess drinking water. The project will also allow resources to be optimised by having more suitable pumping points. The energy savings are estimated to be nearly 66% of current consumption.

myAquaspy

  • Project initiators: Commune of Leytron, IG group Data solutions SA
  • Description: myAquaspy is a communication application between water network operators and consumers. Composed of several modules, it provides information, promotes the quality of drinking water to consumers and encourages more responsible consumption. The “Network Status and Reporting” module will allow consumers to find out about the status of the network, report problems to the operators and receive alerts about problems in the network. The “Water Quality” module will enable them to look at the water quality indicators at an address and compare the mineral indicators with those of bottled water. Finally, the “Sustainable Consumption” module will enable consumers to view resource consumption indicators and compare the carbon footprint of tap water with that of bottled water.

Partial sanitation of the Rumeling water catchment area

  • Project initiators: Commune of Varen, Schnyder Ingenieure VS AG
  • Description: Some of the water of the commune of Varen is taken from the Dala River, downstream from Rumeling, via a classic lateral intake. The project plans to replace the over 100-year-old “Dufour” desander with a suitable Coanda rake. The Dala is used to irrigate the vineyards and produce power. By renovating the catchment area, the project will ensure that clear water, free of sediment and sand, flows to the vineyards. The vines will be irrigated using a drip system.
